Non-surgical does not mean non-medical

Response from the British Association of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons (BAPRAS – www.bapras.org.uk) to DHSC announcement on ‘Crackdown on Unsafe Cosmetic Procedures’.
According to consultant plastic surgeon and BAPRAS spokesperson Omar Ahmed;
“Non-surgical procedures should not necessarily mean non-medical. Some invasive non-surgical procedures, including the use of Botulinum toxin and dermal fillers, can have significant complications when used inappropriately or by unlicensed personnel."
“In the UK dermal fillers are classed as medical devices and Botulinum toxin is a prescription-only medication. As such, we strongly feel that interventions with such agents should only be carried out by appropriately qualified and trained individuals in regulated settings."
“We ask that the public be vigilant when seeking such interventions, to ensure that practitioners carrying out the interventions are qualified and trained to do so and are only using licensed products, in a facility that is sanctioned by the Care Quality Commission.”
